GeoHot Registers Rubyra1n.com :: Next 4.2.1 Jailbreak App?

It has been discovered that, George Hotz (a.k.a. Geohot), has procured the domain rubyra1n.com. This could be the next, and MUCH NEEDED, untethered jailbreak app, called Rubyra1n. As noted by Redmond Pie, the domain rubyra1n.com seems to be registered by George Hotz with the same credentials of blackra1n.com, another jailbreak tool Hotz released last year. The new rubyra1n, however, doesn’t share the same data with limera1n.com — an app released in October to jailbreak iOS 4.1.

Geohot has not gone public with this information, nor is it known if he is planning to use this domain for an upcoming jailbreak tool, but we wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him coming out with his own iOS 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak for all devices.

Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak to be Released Today

iPhone Dev Team started a redsn0w beta program for users to test untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak which required 4.2B3 SHSH Blobs. This wasn’t intended for mass users as it contained bugs and also required installation of some tool. However, things have moved on and redsn0w 0.9.7b4 will be released today. It will be a more stable release as users’ feedback had helped iPhone Dev Team improving the jailbreak. Today’s build will also include usbmuxd by default but will still be available for MAC only. The next build [redsn0w 0.9.7 b5] will expand to Windows as well.

 

Remember that this untethered jailbreak was a backup plan and more efficient jailbreak by @comex is still not out. It will likely be released to jailbreak 4.3 as iOS 4.3 is not very far.

New Jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.7 for iPod Touch 4G, iPhone 4 and iPad!

The iPhone Dev-Team have just released their “backup plan” (Redsn0w 0.9.7) for
untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak.

The just released beta version of Redsn0w will enable you to jailbreak (untethered)
your iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4G on iOS 4.2.1.

Here’s what you will need to have and know before proceeding:

• iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 4.2.1
• iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with SHSH blobs saved for iOS 4.2 Beta 3.
• Mac OSx
• Access to iOS 4.2 Beta 3 firmware file.
• If you rely on Ultrasn0w unlock, STAY AWAY from this version of Redsn0w.
• Currently limited to iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4G only.

The best thing about this “backup plan” is that it doesn’t require you to restore or
re-jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Warning Note:

This is a beta tester program. Things can go very wrong, so please don’t even consider testing if you have pictures or other media on your device that you haven’t backed up!
Until we fix some sandbox issues with bluetooth, the bluetooth functionality is disabled.

LET'S GET STARTED:

Note: Skip to Step 2 if you have previously jailbroken (tethered) your iOS device on iOS 4.2.1 with Redsn0w.


Step 1: Restore your iOS device to the official iOS 4.2.1 firmware and jailbreak it
using Redsn0w by following our step by step guide posted here.


Step 2: This untethered jailbreak completely relies on SHSH blobs saved for 4.2b3
(iOS 4.2 Beta 3).
To check whether you have SHSH blobs saved for iOS 4.2 Beta 3,
start Cydia and wait for it to completely load the main page.

You should now see “SHSH: 4.2b3” on top as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 3: Download Redsn0w 0.9.7 and connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with Mac.


Step 4: Now download usbmuxd from here and extract it on your computer. Start
Terminal in python-client directory and then run the following commands as shown
in the screenshot below.

chmod +x tcprelay.py
./tcprelay.py -t 22:2222

usbmuxd terminal bash

Step 5: Start Redsn0w and point it to the official iOS 4.2.1 firmware file. redsn0w 0.9.7b1 - Welcome

Browse to and select your iOS firmware for your device

IPSW successfully identified

Brose and select the 4.2b3 firmware for your iOS device

Step 6: Now click “Next” and select “Jailbreak Monte” option, followed by selecting
iOS 4.2 Beta 3 firmware file.

Click "Next" again

Select "Jailbreak Monte"

Step 7: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer
before you click “Next”.

       READ THE NEXT STEP BEFORE YOU CLICK "NEXT"
       IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME PLACING YOUR DEVICE IN DFU MODE!

Turn off your iPhone, iPad or iPod and connect to computer

Step 8: At this stage you will be presented with a screen where you will have to:

1) Quickly hold “Power” button. (Top Button)

2) While still holding down the "Power" button (top button), you will now have to hold down the "Home" (bottom button on lower front of your device) button, for 10 seconds.

3) Now after the 10 seconds is up, release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.

Enter DFU mode

Step 8: Sit back and enjoy while Redsn0w will do all the rest for you. Once done, your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will restart automatically and you will find it fully jailbroken (untethered) on the latest iOS 4.2.1 firmware.

UPDATE 1: Redsn0w 0.9.7b2 is now available. Should fix all the native app crashes.

UPDATE 2: Redsn0w 0.9.7b3 is out now! Fixes even more bugs! Download link updated.

Unlock Your iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS 4.2.1 with ultrasn0w

Important notes about iOS 4.2.1 unlock on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G

• Unlocking your iPhone voids your warranty from Apple
• For basebands 05.14 and 05.15 this iOS 4.2.1 unlock requires you to update to baseband 06.15 from iPad 3.2.2 firmware onto your iPhone, this can not be reversed
• You can not downgrade from baseband 06.15 (the iPad baseband), and you will no longer be able to restore to stock firmware. This means you will forever need to use your custom saved IPSW files!
• And finally, directly from the iPhone Dev Team: “iPhone3GS users with old bootroms who want to go to iOS 4.2.1 should not use PwnageTool! Update to stock iOS 4.2.1 first (through iTunes) then use redsn0w 0.9.6b4 to update your baseband.”

It is important that you understand and accept these risks before proceeding.

1. Download PwnageTool 4.1.3 unlock edition from here or one of these mirror sites:

2. Download iOS 4.2.1 for your iPhone 3G
     or iOS 4.2.1 for your iPhone 3Gs

3. Download the iPad's iOS 3.2.2 IPSW firmware from here.
 *To make things easier, place these downloaded files to your desktop or a folder on your desktop so you can easily access these files when needed. 

4. Launch the newly downloaded PwnageTool 4.1.3 and select iPhone 3GS / 3G and point it to the original iOS 4.2.1 firmware you downloaded in step 2.


5. You'll now be asked if you want to update your baseband to the 06.15 version. If you are on 05.14 or 05.15 or higher you will need to do this to unlock. You do not need to do this for jailbreak only. Click on YES and then select Browse for IPSW and point it to iOS 3.2.2 you downloaded.

6. You'll have to choose some options as installing Cydia packages, custom logos and packages. Finally, hit the blue the build button.

7. You'll be asked to save the cooked firmware. Please allow up to 10 minutes.

8. When prompted if your iPhone has been Pwned before, we clicked No. It allows for a more thorough restore. Once done, follow the instructions seen on the screen to enter into DFU mode

9. Now, You will have to restore your iPhone to the jailbroken custom firmware by Clicking on the iPhone icon on the left sidebar of iTunes then hold left “alt” button (“Shift” button on Windows) on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” then release the alt button, Now Select the custom firmware created by PwnageTool and Let iTunes go in a bunch of steps.

10. You can now unlock your iPhone 3GS / 3G through Cydia. Open Cydia app on your device and allow it time to prompt you to update itself. I always choose the 'Complete Update'.

11. Tap on 'Search' and type in "ultrasn0w"

12. Tap on 'ultrasn0w' and then install it by tapping on 'install' at top right corner - then confirm

13. Once ultrasn0w has been installed, tap on "Reboot" or "Respring"

Yes! According to MuscleNerd of the Dev-Team, the untethered  redsn0w jailbreak,
for devices running the new iOS 4.2.1, is about ready. The newest version of redsn0w
will not only jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 devices already tether-jailbroken users can use this
new redsn0w to re-jailbreak to get untethered support without a full restore. So all of
your Cydia apps and other tweaks will not be removed.

iOS 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak isn’t released yet so if you want to jailbreak your
device right now you can use redsn0w 0.9.6 beta 4 to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1. iPhone 3GS
and 3G users can also unlock iOS 4.2.1 with Ultrasn0w 1.2.

How to Jailbreak iPad, iPhone and iPod iOS 4.2.1 with Redsn0w 0.9.6b4

On November 23rd, 2010, The iPhone Dev Team released Redsn0w 0.9.6b4.
Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 brings about the first jailbreak, with a working Cydia app and MobileSubstrate,
to all iOS 4.2.1 devices.

The one nuisance is that it's a tethered jailbreak for the newest devices. Having
a tethered jailbreak means you will have to connect your jailbroken iOS device,
to your computer, and execute the Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 program again in order 
to regain your jailbreak status on every reboot.  This "re-jailbreaking" process
actually takes much less time than the initial jailbreaking of your device.

Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 provides:
    
1) an untethered jailbreak of iOS 4.2.1 for:

• iPhone 3G
• older iPhone 3GS
• non-MC iPod touch 2G

2) a tethered jailbreak for:

• iPhone 3GS (new bootrom)
• iPhone 4
• iPad
• iPod touch 2G (MC model)*
• iPod touch 3G
• iPod touch 4G

      * To find out which model you have, go to Settings => General => About, and then scroll down to  "model".
          The model number there will start with MC (MC model) or MB (not MC model).

MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-Team has confirmed that the next version of Redsn0w
will be released just before Christmas 2010 and will include an option which will
allow you to untether your iPhone jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1 without having to restore
your device.

WARNING: Those of you who rely on a carrier unlock MUST STAY AWAY from

Redsn0w and iOS 4.2.1.

Follow the step by step instructions posted below to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with Redsn0w 0.9.6b4: Step 1: Download iOS 4.2.1 for your version of iOS device.

Step 2: Download Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 for your system:

Step 3: Using iTunes 10.1 or newer, Update/Restore to iOS 4.2.1 firmware using
the IPSW file you just downloaded. Your device needs to be connected to your
computer via USB for this step and beyond.

(If you are using the 'Restore' option to upgrade your device, hold down 'Alt' key and click on Update 
or Restore, then navigate to the IPSW file you just downloaded and double-click/select) 

Step 4: Start Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 and point it to iOS 4.2.1 firmware to proceed
with the jailbreak.

Step 5: Now select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”.

Step 6: Make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer, via USB, before you click “Next”.

Step 7: You will now be instructed to follow a few steps in order to place your device in to the DFU mode by: Quickly hold down the "Power" or "Sleep/Wake" button located on the top of your device. Keep holding down the "Power" or "Sleep/Wake" button AND hold down the "Home" button, for 10 seconds. Release the "Power" or "Sleep/Wake" button but keep holding “Home” button for 15 seconds or until installation begins.
